Bond Street Kindergarten
Alterations & Additions
Public & Educational
The Bond street kindergarten falls under a heritage overlay which restricted the overall design and external materials that could be used. Our design also had to comply with education department guidelines as well as the usual building codes and council regulations. The construction timeline needed to consider kindergarten term holidays so that lessons and children would be least affected.
The request was to extend and upgrade the current bathroom area to create room for more toilets, a bath/shower facility, a baby change area and more storage. The area also needed to be visible from both inside and out. During the design process it was necessary to alter the existing staff toilet to create a disabled toilet facility.
The extension was designed to fit under the existing verandah and around its Heritage columns. The window design and the bricks used were chosen to blend with the original building. We were able to increase the storage area available by utilising the high ceiling area in the existing bathroom to created a mezzanine level.
Despite all of the restrictions surrounding the project we were able to meet our clients brief and, more importantly, all user groups are very happy with the results.
